Chapter 5 Explanation
Chapter 5 Explanation
Felix looked at Oliver, indicating that it was more appropriate for the person involved to explain this topic.
Oliver took a half step forward, his smile unusually fading, and said:
"After a Radiant One completes their third awakening, they need a special catalyst to advance to the next level."
This catalytic medium cannot be obtained directly from nature; it must be extracted from… a living, initially awakened sequencer.
He paused, waiting for Lucius to process the information, before continuing:
"The extracted tissue is a piece of glowing tissue located on the inner dome of the skull. That tissue needs to survive for at least 48 hours after the first awakening to fully take shape."
The substance loses its activity within approximately three minutes of extraction, so the entire ritual must be completed within a very short timeframe.
"Marcus passed the secret to you, he doesn't care whether you can translate it or not." Oliver gently placed the last sentence in front of Lucius:
"He only cares whether you can awaken after coming into contact with the secret teachings. If you die, you are a failed experiment, but if you survive, you are the material he needs for advancement."
Lucius was somewhat stunned by the barrage of information.
Tantric practitioners? The light within the skull? Professor Marcus?
The middle-aged scholar who flew into a rage during the group meeting because of the translation progress was actually a cultist who worshipped an evil god.
There was also the Radiant One, who glanced at Oliver.
But Oliver seemed to know what he was thinking and explained with a smile:
"Our Invincible Sun Church's Sequencers would never use such materials; only esoteric practitioners would do it."
After organizing all the information, Lucius quickly grasped the key points and pressed for an answer:
"Officer Felix, you've been invading my dreams in the middle of the night, and you're probably not just here to tell me this, are you?"
"You're very smart, no wonder you're a student at East York University," Felix exclaimed first, then continued:
"We need your cooperation to retrieve a 'wicked name' from Marcus's research lab."
You can think of it as a kind of mental fingerprint, which can help us quickly and accurately locate his whereabouts.
With your cooperation, the efficiency and precision of the extraction will be greatly improved.
"Okay!" Lucius raised his hand to indicate that he understood. He locked the door and went downstairs with Felix and the other two.
As I passed the second floor, I caught a glimpse of Leo Harrison's door opening a crack before quickly closing it again.
It seems this landlord's fear of the police officer far outweighs his concern for the gas bill.
Outside the apartment building, the black four-wheeled carriage, exactly the same as in his dream, was parked by the roadside, but this time he knew it wasn't a dream.
The four men took their seats in turn, with Felix sitting opposite him, and Oliver and Miles on either side.
The carriage started slowly, then sped up, racing through the empty streets of early morning, heading towards East York University.
Along the way, Lucius finally asked the question that had been weighing on his mind:
"Officer Felix, what does it mean that I passed the preliminary test you mentioned at the end of the dream?"
Felix turned his gaze from the window to Lucius's face; the painted eyebrows looked softer in the shadows of the carriage.
He began:
"In dreams, a person's true nature is revealed. Dark thoughts that are usually suppressed by moral upbringing, or emotions that are suppressed by fear, are amplified in dreams."
Even so, the core essence within remains unchanged. A person of good nature may act absurdly in their dreams, but when faced with the threat to another's life, their first reaction is genuine.
"Lucius, you did very well." He repeated the words he had spoken in the dream, but this time his tone was more solemn:
"The moment you shout 'Watch out!' and reach for the car door, your dream reaction is exactly the same as your waking reaction."
Such consistency is extremely rare. Most people's moral bottom line differs between their dreams and reality, and sometimes the difference is quite large.
"It is because you have proven that you are not the kind of cold-hearted person that we are able to sit face to face with you in this carriage and talk."
If the test results are the opposite...
He didn't finish his sentence, but his meaning was crystal clear.
If the test results were the other way around, then Lucius Anderson might be lying in his apartment right now.
The cause of death would be gas poisoning or some other seemingly plausible accident.
"Thanks to the twenty-four-character educational policy from my past life." He breathed a sigh of relief, and the corners of his mouth couldn't help but curl up slightly.
Be civilized and polite, develop morally, intellectually, physically, aesthetically and practically, stop at red lights and go at green lights, and if you see a child running into the road, your first reaction should be to save them.
These instinctive reactions, which were ingrained in his bones in his original world, became his lifeline in this world at this moment.
The carriage quickly fell silent as it sped along, stopping at the entrance of East York University in less than half an hour.
The university was not yet fully awake in the early morning. There were only a few early risers eating bread as they walked to the school gate. No one paid much attention to the horse-drawn carriage with strange symbols painted on it.
Lucius followed Felix and his group through the school gate. The Hull River meandered through the middle of the campus, and morning mist slowly rose from the river.
Cypress and maple trees are planted on both sides of the river, and the air is so fresh that it feels like it has been washed with water.
The four walked along the Hull River toward a four-story red brick building to the east—the History Department building of East York University.
The red brick walls were covered with ivy, giving them an ancient and solemn appearance. The entrance to the teaching and research office on the left side of the first floor had long been fenced off with thick hemp rope, and a notice was posted on it.
"No unauthorized personnel allowed."
Felix, of course, didn't care about that. He took out a brass key from his pocket and opened the door to the research room.
Lucius followed him in. The study looked exactly the same as he remembered, with a row of bookshelves against the wall, filled with references and historical journals.
In the center was a huge oak workbench, with Ethan and Ava's repair tools scattered on its surface.
The only difference was that there were two human-shaped outlines drawn in chalk on the ground, and a faint, almost imperceptible stench of decay.
"Officer Felix, is there anything I can do for you?" Lucius asked, standing at a certain distance from the two chalk outlines.
“No, you don’t need to do anything.” Felix pointed to Miles Thompson, who had remained silent throughout the entire process:
"He's already collecting evil reputations."
Lucius looked in the direction Felix was pointing and saw Miles with his eyes closed and a fine layer of cold sweat on his thin forehead.
His mouth opened and closed repeatedly, producing a low, rapid sound that was not in any language Lucius knew.
Miles's speech became increasingly urgent, and even Lucius could sense the sense of urgency in it.
Then, as if he had suddenly found something, his lips stopped abruptly, his eyes snapped open, and a look of surprise appeared in his pale gray eyes.
Miles looked at Felix and said in his familiar Horn language:
"Captain, the name has been successfully extracted! The location is northwest by north, about fourteen miles away, and it should be near the abandoned shipyard in the East District."
