Chapter 9 Analysis
Chapter 9 Analysis
After Hilfi's guidance, Gernston immediately understood and told Hilfi about the squadron merger. Hilfi was even more certain of his idea.
"Why is the Baron building up a team for Young Master Holmes so early? Besides, it's said that the Baron's second son is currently managing the territories within the country."
"There are many things you don't understand, so don't think about them too much right now." Sylphy gently squeezed Gerns's shoulder. "What you need to think about now is how to climb up the ladder."
Sylphy was, after all, an ordinary commoner who grew up in the city. Although she was shrewd, she didn't really understand the lives of the nobles, and even dared not to understand them. Ordinary people in this era had more awe for the nobles.
Gerns doesn't have any major goals for the time being. The only thing he's really concerned about right now is whether he can get a promotion at the election meeting in a few days.
Because he cannot guarantee that a worthy opponent will emerge in the next election.
Moreover, he has always believed in the principle of "if you are slow at one step, you will be slow at every step" when it comes to promotion.
"It's getting late, I should head back to camp. It's time for the camp inspection."
Gerns got up and glanced out the window. The moon was already hanging in the sky, and the sparse night was almost indistinct.
"Okay, then I'll wait for your good news."
Sylphy also stood up and watched Gerns walk out of the tavern.
Watching Gerns' departing figure, Sylphy sat at the wooden table, lost in thought.
It wasn't until the candle went out that Sylphy came to her senses. She sighed heavily and, by the dim moonlight, picked up the two empty plates from the table and headed to the kitchen.
Gerns returned to the camp while the gatekeepers were dozing off.
The military camp had long since entered rest time, and the sounds of snoring could be heard from different tents.
The patrol leader and the watchmen had just begun their first round of night patrols, and judging from their movements, it seemed they hadn't yet reached their squad's camp.
Gerns quickened his pace, sneaking towards his tent while also avoiding the watchmen's patrols.
During his stealth journey, Gerns nearly ran into the watchman several times, but always managed to return to his own tent unharmed.
Upon returning to his tent, Gerns did not rush back to his bed. Instead, he hid behind the tent flap and secretly peered outside, making sure that no patrolling officers had seen him.
"Boss, you're only getting back now? You must have been playing something, right?"
Just as Gerns was about to breathe a sigh of relief after confirming that no watchmen had seen him nearby, a slightly mocking laugh came from behind him.
"Shh! Don't talk nonsense, how could I be that kind of person!"
Gerns turned around, and although he wasn't angry at all, he still pretended to be annoyed as he looked at Enzo.
"How could you say such nonsense? We were just discussing whether the bar owner had kept you there and you weren't coming back tonight."
Following up on Gerns's words, Kroger made a low-pitched joke.
"If you keep talking nonsense, I'll make you do extra training tomorrow, and I'll supervise you every single time you finish."
"No, boss, we'll never talk nonsense again."
Upon hearing Gerns' tone, everyone in the tent knew that their leader was about to get serious. What these ordinary soldiers feared most was being given extra training by their captain during practice.
Even during wartime, apart from a few days of relative leisure after a city has been captured, the training in the army is no less rigorous than in peacetime, because it is always a time of preparation for war.
"Hmph, I won't hold it against you this time. Go to sleep early, you have training tomorrow. After training these next few days, I'll arrange for you to take turns patrolling the town."
Thinking that a watchman would pass by the tents soon, Gerns stopped worrying about it and lay back down on his bed after giving a word of advice.
The reason for stationing some people at the tavern was only to prevent any remaining goblin foes from sneaking back. If there were only a few goblin foes, one or two privates plus a few servants would be enough to deal with them.
If another goblin force were to attack, these men weren't stupid, and Gerns instructed them to lead the townspeople towards the military camp.
The others in the tent breathed a sigh of relief when they heard that their captain was no longer going to hold it against them, but at the same time, they looked at Korog and Enzo with a hint of warning in their eyes.
Kroger and Enzo quickly understood the warning in Gerns' eyes and went back to their own beds.
For the team members, Gerns's arrangements also revealed a lot of information.
First, Gerns arranged for his men to patrol the town. Although Gerns currently had the power to do so, relatively speaking, this was beyond his authority.
Acting rashly when one's energy is insufficient is a taboo, and this indirectly reveals Gerns's determination to be promoted to private first class.
Secondly, Gerns only arranged for them to take turns guarding the area for the next few days, which also suggests that the team may set off soon. As for where they will go, everyone has a general idea.
As for sending them to patrol the town, it was mainly to train them.
Although there are special patrol officers patrolling the town, a squad leader like myself can't go too far, but I can still train them to some extent.
Most of the servants in his squad had only been added to the team in the last year. A year or two ago, they were just ordinary farmers who hadn't experienced enough warfare. Having them patrol around and maintain order in the town was a kind of training for them.
Having lived there for so long, the veterans in the team all understood what the captain was saying. Even if they didn't understand, it didn't matter; Enzo and the others would remind them during their evening chats.
This has always been Gerns's charm. Before being possessed by the current Gerns, the original Gerns was like this, and now that he has this body, Gerns will not change this habit.
Otherwise, if these subordinates discover that their boss is no longer the original boss, it will be difficult to handle.
After a night's rest, the next morning, Gerns arrived at the very center of the military camp.
This is where the Baron, the Captain, and Young Master Holmes reside, and there are at least two squads of soldiers stationed outside Young Master Holmes's tent.
These are just the visible sentries; there might be even more skilled individuals among the hidden sentries.
He asked the guards to inform Master Holmes, and then waited outside the door.
He came alone to visit Master Holmes, carrying with him the strange crystal he had found on the goblin the day before, as well as two bottles of ale in glass bottles.
This was something he and Sylphy had agreed upon. Ordinary gifts wouldn't appeal to her, and the only good gift they could find was the crystal. Bringing along two bottles of wine might even help them get closer without making him seem impolite.
After the routine search, the guard who had delivered the message returned and invited Gerns inside. Gerns nodded slightly, straightened his clothes, and walked through the camp gate.
