Chapter 71 Phantom Conductor? [1] (edited)
[Two Days Ago...]
Lillian stared at Marionette, who was holding her hand out to her.
Marionette's eyes were staring down at Lillian's rapier—blinking with curiosity at it.
She then asked:
"Could you perhaps let me take a look at your rapier?"
Lillian tilted her head to the side, staring up at her while she sat on the ground, leaning her back against the tree.
"For what reason, may I ask?"
"You took a peek at mine. I believe it is fair."
Marionette's response did make sense. Lillian did indeed peek into the Purified Quench's Item detail without asking her.
Lillian tapped her chin before waving her hand to the side flamboyantly and summoning the Sonata of Revenge into existence.
She stared at its polished and gleaming surface as it reflected the light coming down from the hole before passing it over to Marionette.
Marionette wrapped her fingers around the hilt of the rapier, raising it and giving it a surprisingly large amount of respect as she stroked the flat side of the blade.
"The Sonata of Revenge..." Marionette murmured, "It's a good weapon. It is simple in its design but still holds the key concept for its existence, albeit the material is quite..."
She then shook her head before passing it back to Lillian.
"Nonetheless. Its enchantments hold great potential to tip the scale in a one-on-one battle."
"Well, I only used one, which just activates on its own."
Marionette nodded, "I am aware. That's why today you'll be using that other one."
"The [Phantom Conductor] one? I guess... I hope it doesn't take up too much mana, though..."
The two widened their eyes in surprise.
The Phantom Conductor stared down at them with a forlorn expression as its body remained floating behind Lillian and slightly above her. Just like how Lillian's body was leaning back, so was it.
With superb elegance in its movements, it placed its right foot back, causing Lillian to do the same and stabilising her falling body before having her raise her rapier over her head.
The Phantom Conductor then swiped the baton down.
Marionette, who was still in the motion of stabbing, watched as Lillian's blade rapidly approached her still face. She then threw a quick glance at Lillian's face, which seemed to express discomfort.
Marionette tightened the muscles in the arm that held her rapier before flicking her wrist and aiming the tip of her blade towards Lillian's chest, ignoring the fact the Sonata of Revenge might slice her in half.
The Phantom Conductor watched Marionette's counterattack and decided to cease its own.
Lillian felt the muscles in her arm that held the Sonata of Revenge tightened to an uncomfortable degree and watched as it raised itself between her and the incoming dark rapier.
The Phantom Conductor's expression briefly changed as it watched the tip of Marionette's blade pass through Lillian's rapier. Its widened eyes soon soften.
It then twisted itself on its left leg, causing Lillian to narrowly dodge Marionette's harrowing stab before raising its other leg.
Lillian's entire body then turned towards Marionette before watching her right leg kick at her with speed she thought she couldn't reach, albeit in exchange for a painful shock from her muscles.
She then watched as Marionette sunk through the ground and into a dark puddle before rapidly passing between Lillian's legs and forming behind her, stabbing her rapier towards the back of Lillian's neck.
The tip of her blade then paused just an inch away from Lillian's neck as she saw no reaction. She stared up at the ghostly apparition and saw it had yet to make any moves like it did earlier. It was just still.
"... You can deactivate it now."
Marionette ordered, watching as the pale blue figure of the Phantom Conductor faded away slowly before finally disappearing.
Soon after, Lillian let out a loud sigh of relief as she fell to the ground, taking in deep breaths.
Marionette raised an eyebrow at this, "Are you alright?"
Lillian stared at her before groaning, "I think my muscles are screaming..."
