Chapter 634: He's Outside!
Chapter 634: He's Outside!
After the previous king and queen were killed by the demons, the current king took over at a very young age, and he had been forced to mature quickly in order to continue leading the army during the period of war. If not for the many advisors who made sure to help him with his decisions, he wouldn't have been able to keep the army afloat at all.
So right now, the king had developed a slight dependence on the advisors, and out of all of them, Ephraim was the one person whose words he never doubted. If Ephraim said that the conditions he gave the demons were fair, then the king believed him.
But some things still didn't make sense to the king.
"Then why is the demon lord attacking us too? If he is only angry with the demons, shouldn't he only be attacking them?"
The king asked this, and Ephraim shook his head before saying that he was sure it was just the demon lord's demonic personality at work.
"All demons are bloodthirsty. Something like this is not beneath them. He came to us for peace, and we kindly hosted him, only for him to end up doing this."
"Wait! You can't go in there! I said –!"
"Get your hands off me!"
Slam!
The sound of quarreling reached the throne room from outside before the door leading into the room was thrown open forcefully! The guards in the room all activated magic circles and pointed them toward the person who had just entered.
James, the son of Duke Grant, was breathing heavily as he looked around the room. He turned to the king in the distance, and he bowed his head to him before he spoke up.
"Your Majesty –"
"James, what is the meaning of this?"
"Your Majesty, this is the bare minimum that is needed for the people to be satisfied. Announcing a peace treaty with the demons was always going to make the citizens worry. It is better to announce their surrender and appease those that have lost a lot to them."
The king hummed curiously as he heard this. Was that really true? Would it be better that way?
James watched what was happening with a narrowed glare. James had been close to convincing the king about the peace treaty, but he could tell that Ephraim had said something to change the king's mind back and disregard everything James had said. Did this bastard wants them all to die?
"Your Majesty, if you'll just allow us to meet with the demon lord and talk! I'm sure you'll understand that—"
Gong~! Gong~! Gong~!
The sound of the warning bells announcing an attack echoed through the central city and drowned out what James was about to say.
And before anyone could react, the castle shook!
BOOM!!
A massive explosion suddenly went off outside the castle walls! Everyone shook from the tremors that traveled through the ground, and Ephraim quickly shouted out for the guards to go and see what was going on!
Many of the guards ran out of the room to go and investigate, and Ephraim told the king to not leave the room no matter what. This throne room was the most protected place in the entire castle, so they would be safe there. James quickly got off his knees and moved out of the room with Seraph to see what had happened. James felt his eyes widen as he looked out the window at the side of the long hallway outside the throne room.
A large plume of smoke was rising from a massive fire near the castle entrance. Hundreds of civilians were running around desperately to try and save themselves, and the sky had darkened with massive bolts of electricity slowly gathering above them! Was the world coming to an end!? James could only think like this at first, but he immediately shook his head as he focused again and looked past the smoke from the fire to the person standing on the grounds.
The demon lord was holding two soldiers by their necks while crushing a third one to death under his feet and glaring at everyone surrounding him. His hands were stained with blood, and every now and then his body would flicker with electricity that would shock the people around him and prevent them from even getting close!
Mark's gaze swept over the civilians and soldiers all around him impassively before his eyes fell to the many dead bodies that were scattered on the floor around him.
On a normal day, Mark would feel bad about killing these many people since it was not in his nature to be bloodthirsty against those who weren't trying to harm him, but right now, Mark just didn't care.
