Chapter 47: Upgrading the Shelter
“Little Knife, judging by your expression, are you thinking about living in a castle?”
Su Mu couldn’t help but notice the way Little Knife rolled her eyes. Given that she now looked like a chibi figurine, it was almost too easy to read her expressions.
Clearly, she found the shelter too shabby.
But Su Mu couldn’t blame her. He felt the same way. A Level 1 Shelter was hardly a safe haven, and its condition could only be described as crude. Even on the World Channel, other survivors were constantly grumbling about the ugliness of their shelters.
However, since Su Mu spent most of his time outside, and the shelter at least offered some protection, he didn’t see the need to waste resources on upgrading it.
“You misunderstand, Master. Mu Ran just thought that since Master once used a golden bucket to fetch water, you must be a very rich person.”
As she spoke, Little Knife instinctively hugged her head, remembering how often Su Mu flicked her forehead. However, this time he didn’t do that. Instead, he regarded the little figure with amusement, clearly aware of the discrepancy between her words and thoughts.
“Little Knife,” he asked with a smile, “was the place you used to live in really that nice?”
Little Knife thought for a moment before nodding. “Mu Ran doesn’t remember her past identity. But I do remember that I had a high status, and my family was fairly wealthy. As for a castle? Perhaps I really did live in one.”
Su Mu pressed on, “Do you remember where your home was? Or at least, where it might have been?”
At this, Little Knife seemed to experience a headache. She clutched her head and shook it slightly.
“Mu Ran doesn’t remember. Those distant memories are too chaotic. Sorry, Master, I can’t recall where my home was.”
Hearing this, Su Mu sighed.
“What a pity. I can’t even find your home on the map. If you remember even a rough location, I could take you there.”
Upon hearing this, Little Knife’s eyes sparkled in delight.
The first noticeable change was to the heart of the shelter—the campfire. No longer a simple pit near the wall, it was now a proper fireplace, surrounded by stone for added protection.
The wooden walls, once fragile and weak, were replaced with solid stone, making the entire structure far more durable.
The shelter’s overall size expanded as well. What had once been a cramped hut, barely large enough for one person to lie down in, now resembled a cozy little villa—big enough for an entire family. It was even two stories, with a roof that reminded Su Mu of a countryside cottage.
He was relieved that he had placed the Level 1 stone walls a little further from the shelter before, or else the new structure would have been blocked by them.
With the final series of rumbling noises, the shelter’s transformation was complete.
What had once been a small, four- or five-meter hut was now large enough to comfortably accommodate multiple people.
And not only that, it was now a two-story building, with a charming roof that looked like something out of a rural villa.
Su Mu nodded in satisfaction. The shelter had turned out exactly as he had hoped. With this sturdier, villa-like structure, he no longer needed to worry about the upcoming acid rain in two days.
Meanwhile, Little Knife clung to Su Mu’s shoulder, wide-eyed in awe as she observed the transformation.
Where had the old wooden hut gone? How had it turned into this?
“Did Master cast a spell?” she wondered aloud.
Looking at the newly built, sturdy yet aesthetically pleasing shelter, Little Knife couldn’t help but want to slap herself.
She had admitted before that she found the original shelter too shabby. But now, her master had turned it into this magnificent structure in an instant. What more could she possibly complain about?
Of course, Su Mu had no complaints regarding Little Knife’s earlier thoughts.
He placed her back on his shoulder and smiled.
“Little Knife, let’s go inside.”
“Let’s see how our home looks now!”
