Chapter 590: Disposable Warmachines
Chapter 590: Disposable Warmachines
"The attack from the Angels was too organized. It’s obvious that someone in the demon army told the Angels something that allowed them to bring reinforcements that quickly. And since they had to have known about it at least half a day before we went on the attack to give the reinforcements enough time to arrive—"
"They had to have found out from someone who knew about the attack before the rest of the army. That means it has to be someone in the demon council that told them."
Mark grinned and nodded at Arit’s correct deduction. He knew she would understand even without him having to lay it all out. Arit’s brow furrowed into a frown, and after a while, Mark saw her baring her fangs angrily as she stared into space. He wondered what was going through her mind, and when he asked, Arit shook her head.
"I thought of just killing all of them and getting a new council, but it would be bad since they’re the strongest soldiers we have. It would destroy any fighting chance we have against the angels."
Mark chuckled and spoke up in agreement.
"Yeah, it would be bad for the army if we lose that many strong soldiers at once, and killing all of them just to weed out one or two traitors doesn’t seem ideal. I don’t want to just rush into this, that’s why I’m trying to think of a way to flush the traitor out without alerting them that I know about them. It’s a bit difficult, but I think I might have come up with something."
Arit was surprised by this declaration, and she immediately shuffled upwards so that she and Mark were practically nose to nose. She kissed him deeply before asking what his plan was. As Mark explained it to her, Arit’s eyes only grew wider and wider until she was gaping at him in silent shock. Arit never thought Mark was the sort of person to be so... diabolical. Arit knew that the only reason Mark was doing all this was because he wanted to sign a peace treaty with the Angels, but she couldn’t help thinking that if Mark wanted to, he could win the entire war! His battle instincts had clearly carried over to his ability to strategize.
"So you’re not going to do anything about it for now?"@@@@
Mark listened to Hunn as he laid out the current state of the island of Aragon, which was vital for the war for the demons. Mark’s attention was fixed on the map laid out on a table in the middle of the room. The other council members were seated at various spots around the large table, with Arit sitting closest to Mark on his right.
Although Mark had told Arit earlier not to let any of the other council members know that he was already suspicious of a traitor in their ranks, Arit couldn’t help but let her eyes roam over the members of the council with slight suspicion as she wondered which of them was the traitor. Arit knew that Mark was a very calm person and wouldn’t let information like this agitate him, but Arit was not that calm.
Arit felt anger bubble somewhere deep in her stomach every time she remembered that one of the bastards here was selling information to the Angels, making things harder for Mark! These fucking fools had asked Mark for help, and they dared to do something like this! Arit just wanted to kill all of them so they could establish a new council and start all over again!
But that wouldn’t be possible since these soldiers were the strongest in the entire demon army. Killing any of them would take away a vital piece from Mark’s army if they were wrong, and killing a member of the council without proof would only alienate them from the rest of the council members, who would think they could be killed pointlessly at any moment.
"...The last demon lord had planned an expedition to raid the island and take it back from the Angels, but before he could do that, we were attacked in the Nevada deserts by a large troop of Angels, and the demon lord was killed by the S-tier Angel, Cherum."
Hunn frowned and went silent as he said this, and Mark hummed calmly as he took in all this information. Mark waved Hunn on, telling him to continue. This made Hunn come back to reality, and he nodded as he continued his report.
Although Mark appeared to be listening calmly on the outside, inside, his mind was racing through everything Hunn had just said. So the previous demon lord was ambushed and died to an S-tier. Didn’t that strike any of the demons as strange?
What were the Angels doing in the Nevada desert? From the map here, the Nevada desert is in a wide expanse of land that should be demon territory. Unless information about the demon lord’s presence had leaked, it would have been impossible for the Angels to even know he was there. Did no one really suspect anything wrong with the ambush?
Don’t tell me the Angels have become so used to the whole process of summoning a demon lord that they no longer care for the life of their lord. Do they just see us as disposable war machines they can resummon and replace once the old one dies?
